MBSO JUNIOR STRINGS

Junior strings

The MBSO JUNIOR STRINGS (formed in 2014) is a recent addition to the groups which perform under the MBSO umbrella. It is designed for primary and early high school aged string performers to give them more experience of playing as an ensemble. Players in the MBSO Junior Strings ensemble progress on to playing in the MBSO Youth Symphony.

The MBSO Junior Strings performs at all MBSO concerts. Sectional rehearsals will be scheduled throughout each year.

CONDUCTOR

Junior Strings Conductor - Katie Lawton

The musical director of the MBSO Junior Strings is Katie Lawton, a strings specialist in the Moreton Bay region. Katie has marvellous credentials, with an honours degree in Music Performance from the University of Queensland, where she studied voice, violin, viola and cello. As well as being MBSO’s Concertmaster, Katie has herself been a performer and educator for many years and believes passionately in the importance of music education for young people.

Katie loves musical theatre, and has performed both onstage and in the orchestra pit with many Brisbane groups, including Harvest Rain Theatre Company, Ignatians, Redcliffe Musical Theatre, Brisbane Arts Theatre and Queensland Musical Theatre. Katie previously played first violin in the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, performs regularly as a freelance musician with a string quartet, plays in a jazz duo with her partner Mitch (guitar) and recently has started playing for colonial and bush dances.

Katie has been a music educator for many years; teaching strings at schools in the Moreton Bay region, as well as conducting school string ensembles and chamber groups. Katie is passionate about the benefits of music education for everyone!
